Spring
Spring has certainly sprung this last week. As the days warm up we are reminded of the beauty and renewal that this season brings. Spring is a time of hope, growth, and fresh beginnings; a reflection of God’s promise of new life.
In our Catholic tradition, we embrace this season with gratitude and joy, recognising the presence of God in every blooming flower and warming breeze.
It’s a wonderful opportunity to pause, reflect, and invite God’s grace into our daily lives.
To celebrate this season of renewal, I share this simple prayer:
Lord of all creation,
We thank You for the gift of Spring.
May the blossoming earth remind us of Your love and the promise of new beginnings.
Help us to grow in kindness, compassion, and joy, just as nature flourishes around us.
Bless our school community with peace and purpose,
and guide us to be stewards of Your beautiful world.
Amen.”

Amazing Talent
I had the absolute pleasure of attending the Music Showcase on Friday 22 August and the Dance Showcase on Friday 29 August. Both events were incredible in the talent, determination and joy our students demonstrated. Our Music in Practice Showcase was also a significant opportunity for our students to celebrate their outstanding talents. Congratulations to all students involved both in performance and in the Technical Crew.
I again congratulate our staff and thank them for their generosity in volunteering to ensure that these events can provide such wonderful opportunities for our students.

Uniform Update Reminder
You may recall a review of the Middle Years uniforms in 2024. Parents and students were consulted, and a decision was made to align the Year 7-8 uniform with the Year 9-10 (but different tie). While not affecting current students, this uniform amendment will commence with Year 7 in 2026. Year 8 in 2026 will have the option to continue with the current (2025) uniform or move to the new version. Please note that only new uniform items will be sold in the uniform stop from January 2026. Previous version will only be sold until the end of this school year. See images below for the change.

Attendance Matters – Early Departures
A reminder to parents and guardians that the College has a clear attendance policy regarding Early Departures. The College follows these expectations strictly to ensure appropriate care and safeguarding of our students:
Early Departures (as per Attendance Policy):
- A student is considered to be leaving early any time before 2:54 pm.
- All students leaving early will provide a notification from a Legal Guardian via the BCE Connect App or Parent Portal.
- If Student Reception staff are unsure of the notification's validity, a call will be made to the student’s main contact to confirm.
- Students in Years 7 to 10 require the Legal Guardian or an approved delegate to attend Student Reception to sign the student out, fulfilling duty of care obligations.
- If someone other than a legal guardian is collecting the student, written permission must be provided to admin@cvxmck.edu.au.
- Students in Years 11 and 12 are to advise their Pastoral Leader of an early departure and the reasons why.
Thank you for your understanding and support in ensuring these are attended to.
Awards Evening 2025
This year our annual Awards Evening will take place at Sleeman Centre Auditorium at Chandler, commencing at 6:30pm. We are well underway in the planning for this significant celebration of excellence. A reminder to parents and students:
- Awards are determined on Term 1-3 results only. No Term 4 data is included.
- Awards Criteria can be found on the College website - College Awards
- Invitations for award recipients and performers will be sent early in Term 4, via ParentSlips (email)
- All students who will be presented on stage must wear a college blazer
More information will follow as we approach this event.

Academic Excellence Program (Years 7 – 10) 2026
This year, the College initiated the Academic Excellence Program, a comprehensive initiative designed to challenge and enrich the learning experiences of academically talented students.
The program aims to:
- Extend each student to achieve their full academic potential.
- Reflect the College’s Vision for Learning: developing visionary young people who embrace a changing world with confidence and hope.
- Provide enriched learning opportunities through extension and acceleration.
- Empower students with exceptional academic ability and motivation to access curriculum enrichment.
In Years 7 – 10, students participate in one of two strands:
- Strand A: Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Technology, Aerospace, Design, and Health.
- Strand B: English, The Arts, and Humanities (History, Geography, Business, and Law).
In Years 8 – 10, the program will become invitational based upon Semester 1 and Semester 2 Academic Report Results. Once the school reports for Semester 2 have been produced, there will be a process of determination.
In the second week of December, invitations will be sent to students whose academic results in the 2025 Academic Year have made them eligible (that is, achieving more A’s than B’s). The invitation will inform students and parents of what is required to take up that invitation.
For Year 7 in 2026, there will be two separate processes of entry into the program. The first is by completing an ICAS style Maths or English exam at the College (date to be determined). The second process of invitation will be sent to students in late Term 1, following PAT M and PAT R testing.

Ready to Achieve - Exam Block – Week 9
As this newsletter is released our Year 11 and 12 cohorts will be rapidly approaching their Term 3 Exam Block, commencing Friday 12 September. For Year 12s the MOCK Exams are compulsory and are vital as their last preparation for External Exams in Term 4. For our Year 11s the exam block will mark the end of Unit 2 and their Year 11 academic program.
We would also take this opportunity and ask that during Exam Block our students pay particular attention to the following to ensure the best possible outcomes with minimal anxiety and stress.
Study Program – Study is the priority throughout the next two weeks. All other activities should have been arranged to allow for maximum study time. These would include adjusting or changing part-time work and sporting commitments to fit in with study needs.
Punctuality – Some students may need to modify their normal transport arrangements to suit the times of the exams. Ensure that they are early for exams (at least 30mins) so sufficient time is available to gather all the necessary equipment etc. and to calm them prior to entering the exam room. There is nothing worse for stress levels than rushing into an exam room at the last minute.
Travel - Students are required to travel directly to and from the College during exam block. Gathering in groups at other venues for study sessions is not permitted during this time. If students have split or multiple exam sessions on one day they are required to stay on campus and continue their preparation for future exams. They can either sign in at the Library for individual study or seek permission to be seated quietly in the bus shelter area in Clairvaux Court.
Teacher support - If students wish to access a teacher for further study or tutorial assistance, they must book in with that teacher well before the exam time. Students are NOT to turn up at school thinking they can catch up with staff for assistance without first making a suitable meeting time.
Organisation – All students MUST have current student I.D. with them at ALL exams. They must be organised and have all of the necessary equipment. Parents, please remind students to check what the required materials are for each exam. It is their responsibility to have this equipment / materials with them. They must have a clear pencil case or A4 clear sleeve to be used to hold their writing equipment. All other equipment/belongings must be locked in lockers – nothing that is not necessary for the exam is permitted in the exam room.
Uniform – All normal college uniform regulations apply. Students must wear their full and correct day uniform to and from the College throughout Block Exams. Students who do not follow these guidelines will not be permitted to enter the exam room until they comply. If students come to school for any reason whether long term or for just a short visit to pick something up or meet with a teacher during exam block, they MUST be in full school uniform and sign in and out through the office.
Illness – if students are unable to attend an exam due to illness, they are expected to notify the College of their absence (via the BCE Connect app) as well complete a Short-Term AARA application along with providing a Doctor’s Certificate on their return to the College. Students must present to their teacher the next time they are at the College to check when the exam is to be completed.
If students have any concerns or a problem arises during block exams they are to find Mr Boyle, Mr Morris, Mr De Luca or their Home Room teacher or present to the College Office immediately.

Pastoral Leader –

Ian Morris,
Pastoral Leader –

Academic Excellence News
Strand A students in the Year 7 AEP were treated to a day of theme park design with the Curriculum Leader – Design and Technologies, Mr Rory Johanson. After being introduced to the world of theme parks, students were tasked with using a project design framework to develop and refine their idea using the elements of logo, external design and internal design of their ride or eatery. After clarifying their criteria for the success of their design, students went away to craft a model of their design using carboard, hot glue and coloured pens.
At the end of the day, each students presented their design brief and model to the rest of the group evaluating the success of their design against their original criteria. There was a strong focus throughout the day on purposeful design underpinned by evaluation skills.
There were some fantastically original concepts and students had a lot of fun creating their models.
I met my criteria by working hard and creating something that had the right colours, brought intensity and adrenalin, and finally by bringing joy to others. . . I easily met my expectations while having fun and focusing on how to make it better every step of the way. Ewan
My model could have been improved with more time and a quicker working hot glue gun, so I could get more done. . . overall my Ironman carriage model came together and was definitely a success because . . . it followed all of my criteria and came together well. Tilly
I met my criteria that I set because I made my Ironman head 3D and it looked pretty good. What I could have done better is colour it better. Overall, I am happy with my creation today. Leonardo

CBCA 80th Birthday Celebrations at City Hall
Five excited CMC students had the most wonderful adventure on Saturday 23 August into City Hall to help Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA -Qld branch) celebrate their 80th birthday.
What an adventure it proved to be with the opportunity to spend special time with some of Australia’s most well-known children’s authors. Carla Salmon, Pamela Rushby, Michael Gerard-Bauer, Brian Falkner, Anna Whateley, and Di Taylor, each sat at our table to tell us about their writing experiences, sign books and answer curious questions.
A game of ‘pass the parcel’ meant that each attendee was gifted a new book to get signed and added to their home library. As Michael Gerard-Bauer so aptly put it, reading is powerful magic for “when we read, we are an equal partner with the author… we cast the characters… and … we do all the special effects in our mind… all from just a few lines.”
Special congratulations to the CBCA (Qld branch) event organisers for providing this wonderfully memorable event!

Book Week 2025
It was a whirlwind of fun and games in the library last week with celebrations for the 2025 CBCA Book Week. With a theme of “Book an Adventure” the library became a haven for dinosaurs and many other clever creations by Mrs. Yaiza Martinez. Special thanks go to Ms Melissa Taylor and Ms Yaiza Martinez for their contribution to the smooth running of events, and our fabulous Masked Readers – Isabelle S, Hamish B, Mr Moon, Ms Stirton, Ms Knox and Mr Morris.
Learners were able to get involved in a myriad of separate library challenges, photobooths, book chats and makerspace activities! There were also many eager participants in our Race to the Library each morning in search of the special book clue. Congratulations go to our competition winners over the week.
Congratulations to the following students who were the winners of our Book Week Competitions and our Tuckshop Vouchers! Thank you to everyone who participated.

“What an astonishing thing a book is. It's a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you're inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years.” Carl Sagan

Celebrating Our Opti-Minds Success at the Regional Opti-Minds Science and Technology Challenge!
We are proud to share the outstanding achievements of our Opti-Minds teams at the recent 2025 Regional Opti-Minds Science and Technology Challenge, held at Griffith University’s Logan Campus. This year, we entered teams across three divisions and came away with excellent results—winning two out of three divisions and placing strongly in the third.
- Division 2: First Runner-Up
- Division 3: Winners and First Runner-Up
- Open Division: Winners

These results highlight the creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills of our students, who dedicated themselves to weeks of preparation, collaboration, and innovative thinking.
A special congratulations goes to our Division 3 Winners and Open Division Winners, who will now represent our school at the Queensland State Finals, to be held at the University of Queensland on 18-19 October.
We thank all students, teachers, and mentors involved for their hard work and commitment. Your efforts truly embody the spirit of Opti-Minds - imagination, creativity, and teamwork. We look forward to cheering on our finalists as they take on the next stage!
In the spirit of growth, the STEM program team challenged ourselves this year by extending our Opti-Minds success into a more challenging goal- entering teams in 3 Divisions. Opti-Minds have allocated 4 divisions for the challenge- Division 1 for Primary Schools, Division 2 for students up to Year 10, Division 3 for students up to Year 12 and the Open Division up to professionals.

Can Drive 10th September 2025
This term, Vinnies will be running our second House Charity Spirit event. This will involve our annual Can Drive competition. The College House with the longest Can Line will be awarded points to go towards our St Vincent de Paul 2025 Perpetual House Charity Spirit Award. MacKillop House is currently in first position for their generous contribution to our Winter Appeal. Which House will win points for our next charity event?
What canned products are needed by our local Vinnies Conference? Any tinned fruit, vegetables, fish, soups, baked beans, spaghetti or other non-perishable foods would be greatly appreciated. If each student contributed just one can our donation would look phenomenal! Please organise your cans for our Can Drive Competition. Thank you so much for your support of SVdP.

Ozanam Leadership Program
By Maria M
Earlier this year Lily and I were privileged to be accepted into the Ozanam Leadership Program run by the St Vincent de Paul Society.
Over the past few months, we have taken part in many exciting experiences and have been so blessed to further develop our leadership skills in the guidance development sessions.
Our program began with a 3-day trip to Emu Gulley with the pleasure of sleeping in swags, cooking our own food, and engaging in some wonderful activities. The camp focused on ANZAC stories and themes and emphasised the importance of mateship and togetherness.
Some activities we partook in were mud treks, flour fights, buggy racing, tunnel climbing, and challenge courses! The camp fostered an amazing atmosphere of community, and many friendships were made over the trip!
Ever since, we have continued to enjoy our time together as a group! A few weeks ago, we went to the CEO sleepout at Cbus Super Stadium and ran a homelessness awareness activity to advocate for home insecurity to all the attending CEOs. Over the holidays, we ran the monthly Vinnies Buddies Day and facilitated a variety of ‘mini-Olympics’ themed games for the young people.
Overall, we have met some absolutely amazing people and have created friendships that will last a lifetime. We look forward to continuing to serve our wider community and can’t wait to see what’s installed for the future!

What is an ATAR and how to apply/get your ATAR
QTAC will calculate your ATAR based on your Year 12 results provided by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority. ATAR results are used nationally for tertiary admissions. It is the standard measure of your overall academic achievement in relation to other students where these students have studied different subject combinations. ATARs are expressed as a number on a 2000-point scale from 99.95 to 0.00 in steps of 0.05. So, the highest ATAR is 99.95, then 99.90, then 99.85, and so on, down to 0.00. ATARs below 30 are reported as ‘30.00 or less’.
This registration is COMPLETELY SEPARATE to your QTAC course application for study in 2026. If you are ATAR eligible you need to apply/register for BOTH.
ATAR Portal registrations now open
To register to receive your ATAR, go to the QTAC website, and click on ATAR Portal. Registering for your ATAR is FREE.
- All ATAR eligible Queensland Year 12 students can now register for the ATAR Portal to receive their ATAR
- Queensland ATARs for 2025 Year 12 students will be released on Thursday 18 December.
- Students wishing to apply for study interstate will also be required to register for the ATAR Portal to provide us with the necessary consent for us to share their ATAR with interstate tertiary admissions centres. Click here to register QTAC
During the short registration process, you will be asked to respond to three statements by checking a tick box as to whether:
- You acknowledge that you have read, understood and agree to be bound by the policies, terms and conditions
- I do not consent to my ATAR or ATAR eligibility as determined by QTAC being shared with the school I attended in Year 12
If you check this box, QTAC WILL NOT notify your school of your ATAR results which can make it difficult for your school to provide you with follow up career pathway support if needed - but it is totally your decision.
and
- I do not wish to be sent an email notifying me that my ATAR result has been released. If you check this box you will need to log into your ATAR account with QTAC to find your ATAR result.

Yaga Homework Club

Parents, carers, and students are reminded that the College offers a free Homework Club on Monday and Wednesday afternoons in the Resource Centre (3.05pm to 4.30pm.)
This is an opportunity to finish homework, work on assignments or study while teachers are available to offer assistance.
Students are also encouraged to come and read for pleasure as well. There is a designated Quiet Room as well as general areas for individual or group work.
Students need to bring their ID or diary to sign in and all relevant work materials.
